If you are travelling to Skye from England or southern Scotland using a sat nav, be sure to select the 'avoid ferries' option if prompted [unless of course you have a ferry crossing booked] otherwise you may end up at Mallaig, west of Fort William & will either have to wait for a space on the ferry or have added a round trip of 100miles to your itinerary.
An additional recommendation is - if your journey involves the M6/M74 to Glasgow, exit the M74 at J4, take the M73 then M80 & M9 for Stirling exiting at J10 onto the A84 to Crianlarich via Callander. This alternative & slightly longer route around the east of Loch Lomond & The Trossachs is a better road, avoids both crossing Glasgow [particularly busy at rush hour] & the busy narrow winding A82 to Crianlarich. Beware, however that the sat nav will probably constantly try to re-route you back on the shorter A82 option, so it may be advisable to add a travel ‘via Callander’ instruction to your sat nav directions.
After crossing the Skye bridge, follow the A87 to Uig, before turning right onto the single-track A855 for approximately 5 miles until you reach Kilvaxter. Look out for the right-hand turn signposted ‘Heribusta’ [Hearabusta] at Kilmuir Hall & the recycling bank. Follow the lane for approximately 1 mile. 8 Herbusta is the first property on the left.
Alternatively, if arriving in the opposite direction on the A855 from Staffin, continue for 2miles after passing Duntulm Castle until you reach The Skye Museum Of Island Life. Turn left here, drive past the museum car park & Kilmuir Cemetery then on for a further mile. 8 Herbusta is the last property on the right.
